Responsible German shepherd dog owners train their dogs, clean up after them, and obey leash laws. Doing these things helps all of us continue to have the right to live with these wonderful dogs.

Training results in a better behaved pet and wonderful companion animal. Finding an instructor who knows and understands our breed is important. Harsh training methods are not effective with this breed! Strong leadership is a must, and can be accomplished in non-confrontational, fun ways.

If you would like to explore obedience, rally, tracking, agility, or want help with basic obedience or behavior questions, send an e-mail by clicking on the “Contact us” button on any page. We can provide recommendations for qualified trainers in the Manhattan, Salina, Topeka and Lawrence areas who understand German shepherd dogs. Classes are no longer offered under the auspices of the GSD Club of Central Kansas, since it disbanded in 2009.

Why the club was started in the first place

GSDs were targeted by a dangerous dogs task force in 2007 in Manhattan, Kan., and added to a list of potentially dangerous dogs. A strong presence by dog owners at city commission meetings prevented this bad law from being even worse.

Although Breed Specific Legislation was defeated by the Manhattan City Commission in 2007, being added to the list places GSDs under increased scrutiny forever in Manhattan.

We want to keep our dogs and want you to be able to keep yours, but it requires commitment to responsible pet ownership by all of us.

Welcome

KansasGSD replaces the web site for the German Shepherd Dog Club of Central Kansas. The club was formed in early July 2007 as a non-profit organization to promote training and responsible ownership of our breed. It was disbanded in 2009.

The goals of encouraging responsible dog ownership remain strong and this web site will continue to offer information.

If you are in the Manhattan area, you should know that the city has a leash law and requires licenses for dogs. You will need proof of rabies vaccination to get a license, which is available at City Hall.
